*NOTE: This specific Hilton Head Island map is not available for purchase. I have had a lot of requests, but cannot sell this map. This map is not for sale because it was a custom map made for a specific client and is licensed to them. It is not a stock image that anyone else can purchase or license. I am simply showcasing this map in my portfolio as a past project to show what I can illustrate for future clients.

Hilton Head Island has a rhythm all its own — sun-soaked beaches, bike paths that go for miles, and that lowcountry magic you can’t quite capture in words. So, I did the next best thing: I drew it.
This illustrated map celebrates the island’s blend of laid-back charm and coastal beauty. From the iconic Harbour Town Lighthouse to winding marshland waterways, every line was hand-drawn to feel both playful and personal. It’s not just about navigation — it’s about capturing the essence of place.
Why an Illustrated Map?
Because sometimes Google Maps just doesn’t cut it. An illustrated map has personality. It reminds you of sticky ice cream cones after a beach day, or that little boutique you wandered into by accident and couldn’t leave without a souvenir. It’s memory-making in visual form.
The Design Approach
For Hilton Head, I leaned into clean linework, subtle whimsy, and a nod to vintage travel posters. It’s detailed enough to recognize familiar landmarks, but still light and approachable — the kind of map you’d want framed on your wall, not shoved in a glovebox.
Building the Visual Language: The Brand Board
To make sure the map felt cohesive and true to Hilton Head’s personality, I created a full brand board alongside it. This meant defining a color palette inspired by sand dunes and seafoam, selecting typography that balances elegance with legibility, and creating a custom set of icons for wayfinding and local landmarks. We also established logo variations and photography styles to ensure every piece of collateral — from digital guides to print signage — carries the same consistent look and feel.
Why It Works
The result? A map that isn’t just functional, but branded, cohesive, and instantly recognizable. It reflects Hilton Head’s identity while giving visitors (and locals) something worth pinning up on the fridge or tucking into a scrapbook.
Where This Fits
Custom illustrated maps like this one are perfect for:
Wedding invitations (because directions should look as good as the big day)
Vacation rentals (a keepsake guests won’t forget)
Destination marketing (hello, brochures and social posts)
It’s more than a map. It’s a snapshot of a destination’s soul — hand-drawn, one line at a time.
