Charleston Storybook Illustration System
A place-based illustration system built from the architecture, color, and coastal rhythm of Charleston, South Carolina.
Charleston Storybook translates the city’s pastel façades, wrought-iron balconies, and Lowcountry details into a cohesive illustration system currently being refined into a seamless surface pattern. Rooted in architectural precision and soft coastal color, the collection captures Charleston’s unmistakable streetscape character.
The Story
Charleston is layered with visual rhythm — narrow row houses, piazzas, shuttered windows, gas lanterns, historic churches, cobblestone streets, and harbor views. Its color palette alone tells a story: muted pastels, creamy stucco, ironwork shadows, and humid coastal light.
This collection began as a detailed architectural study, drawing from those recognizable elements to build a modular illustration system. Each motif was created to function independently or within a structured repeat, with pattern refinement currently in development.
Rather than romanticizing the city, the goal is to organize its architectural personality into a repeatable visual language that feels authentic and scalable.
What’s Inside
Architecture & Streetscapes — Historic row houses, pastel façades, shutter details, church steeples, piazzas, wrought-iron gates
Coastal & Garden Elements — Palmettos, window boxes, climbing vines, magnolia references, harbor cues
Urban Details — Gas lanterns, cobblestone textures, ornamental trim, historic signage accents
All illustrations are hand-drawn with consistent line weight and architectural balance, forming the foundation for future repeat development.
Colorways
Blush Stucco (Original) — A soft cream with subtle pink undertones inspired by Charleston’s historic stucco façades and sun-washed pastel architecture. This warm neutral highlights architectural detail while maintaining a romantic, heritage-driven atmosphere.
Additional colorways will be explored as the repeat structure is finalized.
Coordinate Patterns
Lowcountry Fronds — Soft tonal palmetto repeat. A quiet, airy coordinate inspired by Charleston’s coastal canopy and subtropical landscape. Designed to add texture and place without competing with the primary illustrations. Ideal for secondary surfaces like packaging interiors, stationery backs, web section fills, tissue paper, and pattern linings.
Rainbow Row Wash Stripes — Loose watercolor stripe repeat. Inspired by Charleston’s iconic pastel facades and timeworn stucco walls. The hand-painted vertical rhythm introduces movement and color variation while remaining flexible and modern. Works well for borders, postcards, envelopes, belly bands, apparel accents, and digital backgrounds.
Both coordinate patterns are built from the same Charleston illustration system and palette, designed to support the hero pattern rather than compete with it. Together, they allow the collection to scale across products and surfaces while maintaining a cohesive, place-based identity.

System Thinking
Charleston Storybook is structured as a modular architectural illustration system. Building anchors establish scale, while secondary elements provide spacing rhythm and repeat flexibility.
This system-first approach ensures the collection can expand into alternate scales, coordinate patterns, and additional colorways while maintaining visual cohesion.
